july 2018: BIG news from Ilana!

When Room to Move was founded in 1998, it was a dream come true for me—now twenty years ago! I had envisioned, and have created, a beautiful studio space for conscious movement in Port Townsend. Over the years it has been an honor and an inspiration to collaborate with all the talented, dedicated RTM teachers and students. In 2017 RTM was voted Best Yoga Studio! Thank you!

As you may already know, RTM has been a labor of love for me and I've run it more as a community service, than a profitable venture. At this time I wish to focus more on studying, teaching, and bodywork and less on the business aspects of the studio. So, it is with great excitement and anticipation that I announce some changes are happening at RTM. (According to yoga tradition, change can bring forth either pain or joy!)

As of July 1, 2018 the ownership of RTM will be transferred to Adrienne Robineau, local graphic designer, business consultant, drumming instructor, and yoga student, who since 2006 has created RTM's print and digital graphic marketing. She has also consulted with me on running RTM and has been the studio administrator since April 2017. I am so grateful for Adrienne's help and I truly believe that without all her hard work over the years, the studio would not be open today!
Going forward, I will continue to teach, offer massage and bodywork, and consult with Adrienne to provide our wonderful community the best possible venue for teachers and students of conscious movement. I look forward to the fruits of this change with gratitude. With hands together, Ilana

Note from Adrienne...

I am honored and grateful for Ilana's kind words and the trust she has placed in me in owning and running her beloved studio. I have so enjoyed working with her and will continue to rely on her vast experience and expertise into the future.

“Room to Move” will now be “Room to Move Yoga, LLC.”  There will be some other changes happening, but for the most part, the studio will continue as is has. I do hope to add more classes and workshops and plan on making improvements ranging from studio amenities and organization to the business systems behind the scenes. I'm open to any ideas and suggestions and welcome your input.

I look forward to serving all the teachers, students, and staff of Room to Move Yoga, and will strive diligently to keep it your favorite yoga studio in Port Townsend. Namaste, Adrienne Robineau

Room to Move History

Greetings, yoga friends,
I would like to share with you a bit of the history of Room to Move.

It was in 1982 that I first saw the second-floor studio space at 1008 Lawrence Street, with its high ceilings, brick walls, tall, elegant windows, and beautiful light. I knew that some day it would be a space where I and others would come together to create a community that would share various movement arts, personal growth and expression, playfulness, and spirituality.

Sixteen years later, after teaching yoga at the Yoga Shala for 10 years, I realized that it was time for a change. I was feeling confined by the size of the physical space at Yoga Shala, and there were time constraints because of scheduling. A friend told me that the Lawrence Street studio, which had been a dance studio and later an artist's studio, was about to become available to rent. I smiled and, without hesitation, phoned the landlord, Tony Larson. We agreed that I would begin renting the studio first at an hourly rate and eventually going to monthly. In March 1998 Room To Move was created.

As some of you may recall, we have made changes and improvements to the space over the years. Tony has been cooperative and generous with his support, as have many students and friends. In October 2001, I proposed to hold a fundraiser and agreed to match the funds raised to purchase wood flooring. In March 2002, we, as a community, raised enough money to purchase the maple flooring. A group of us installed it with the help and guidance of several local building-contractor friends.

Yoga and other movement and performance art forms have been practiced and performed at Room to Move since we opened our doors. Belly dance, modern dance, Authentic Movement, Continuum, tai chi, and hula are among the movement forms that are still practiced in the space. As of April 1, 2006, those of us teaching yoga at Room to Move decided to unite our efforts to offer a place in Port Townsend where the various movement art forms would continue to practice; where yoga students could attend daily classes and study with experienced and certified instructors whose teaching styles were varied yet compatible. What instructors at Room to Move share in common is a high regard for the wisdom and intelligence of the body, which is cultivated through the practice of yoga.

Each of us here at Room to Move feels truly grateful for, and we look forward to, the opportunity to experience and share the yoga practice with you. —Ilana
